Who Was Sheila Ryan?

Sheila Ryan was an American actress active in Hollywood from 1939 until her retirement in 1958. She appeared in dozens of films across genres including crime dramas, westerns, and comedies, and later made guest appearances on popular television shows.

She was born Katherine Elizabeth McLaughlin on 8 June 1921 in Topeka, Kansas. Her family later moved to Los Angeles, where she attended Hollywood High School and was quickly noticed by talent scouts, leading to a contract with 20th Century Fox.

Early Life and Background

Ryan’s journey into acting began almost by accident. While still a teenager, she auditioned for a role at a local television station in Los Angeles and was cast immediately, marking the start of her professional career.

At just 19 years old, she was named one of Hollywood’s “baby stars of 1940” by a panel of directors. She initially appeared under her birth name, Bettie McLaughlin, before adopting the stage name Sheila Ryan upon signing with 20th Century Fox.

Sheila Ryan’s Acting Career

Rise at 20th Century Fox

Ryan’s breakout role came with the 1941 crime drama Dressed to Kill, released under her new stage name. From there, she became a familiar face in Fox productions throughout the early 1940s.

Westerns and Co-Starring Roles

Ryan became especially well known for her work alongside Gene Autry, appearing in films such as The Cowboy and the Indians (1949) and Mule Train (1950). She also starred opposite Roy Rogers in Song of Texas, cementing her place as a familiar leading lady in the western genre popular at the time.

Television Appearances

As her film career slowed in the 1950s, Ryan transitioned to television. She appeared in episodes of The Lone Ranger, The Gene Autry Show, and The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet before retiring from acting in 1958.

Sheila Ryan’s Marriage to Pat Buttram

Sheila Ryan married actor Pat Buttram in 1952. Buttram later became a household name for his role as the conniving Mr Haney in Green Acres, which aired from 1965 to 1971.

The couple remained married until Ryan’s death in 1975, making theirs one of the more enduring Hollywood marriages of the era. It was her second marriage; she had previously been married to actor Allan Lane from 1945 until their divorce in 1946.

Did Sheila Ryan and Pat Buttram Have Children?

Yes. Sheila Ryan and Pat Buttram had one daughter together, named Kathleen Buttram, who was known by the nickname Kerry.

Kerry later married and became known as Kerry Buttram-Galgano. She had two daughters of her own, meaning Ryan and Buttram became grandparents before Ryan’s passing.

How Did Sheila Ryan Die?

Sheila Ryan died on 4 November 1975 in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, at the age of 54. According to reports, she developed a lung illness after taking a cruise to Mexico with her husband in 1974, and she passed away roughly a year later.

She died at the Motion Picture Country House, a residence established for members of the film industry. She was survived by her husband, Pat Buttram, and their daughter, Kerry.

What Happened to Pat Buttram After Sheila Ryan’s Death?

Pat Buttram continued his acting career after his wife’s death, remaining a recognisable figure through his work on Green Acres reruns and voice roles in Disney animated films. He died on 8 January 1994 from kidney failure, at the age of 78.

Their daughter, Kerry Buttram-Galgano, passed away from cancer in 2007, meaning the family’s direct line continued only through her two daughters.

Sheila Ryan’s Legacy

Although Sheila Ryan is sometimes remembered primarily as Pat Buttram’s wife, her own contribution to classic Hollywood cinema remains significant. With a career spanning nearly two decades and more than sixty film credits, she was a consistent and reliable presence in the western and crime genres that defined much of 1940s American cinema.

Her collaborations with icons such as Gene Autry and Roy Rogers place her firmly within the history of the American western film tradition, a genre that continues to attract classic film enthusiasts today.
